Jordaan

Balthazar’s Keuken French, Mediterranean €€

Offline map Google map ( 420 21 14; Elandsgracht 108; 3-course menu €29; dinner Wed-Fri) This is consistently one of Amsterdam’s top-rated restaurants, but don’t expect a wide-ranging menu. The byword is basically ‘whatever we have on hand’ – but it’s usually absolutely delectable. Plus, there’s a modern-rustic look and attentive service. Reservations recommended.

Japanese Pancake World Japanese €€

Offline map Google map ( 320 44 47; www.japanesepancakeworld.com; 2e Egelantiersdwarsstraat 24a; mains €8-20; lunch & dinner) This little restaurant has a worthy global mission: to spread the addictive taste of Japanese pancakes outside Japan. At the continent’s only shop specialising in okonomiyaki (literally ‘cook as you like’), you’ll get your pancakes in a hot iron dish with your choice of fillings (meat, seafood, vegies, cheese) topped with flakes of dried fish. There are barely two dozen seats: we love to perch at the back counter and watch the chef work his magic. Reservations recommended.

La Oliva Spanish €€

Offline map Google map (www.laoliva.nl, in Dutch; Egelantierstraat 122-124; mains €21-26; lunch Thu-Sun, dinner nightly) The Jordaan’s hottest new restaurant offers its most visually stunning food, inspired by the Basque region. Stroll by and you can see the colourful pintxos (a version of tapas with a northern Spanish/ southern French twist) skewered with wooden sticks and stacked on the gleaming bar, where hungry foodies sip cava (Spanish sparkling wine) and gaze lustfully at the stuffed figs, mushroom Manchego tartlets, and Pata Negra ham with pear. (Yes, there are perfectly lovely meat and fish mains, but it’s the pintxos that everyone’s raving about.) In summer, the party spills out into the street like an impromptu dinner among friends.

Hostaria Italian €€

Offline map Google map ( 420 21 14; 2e Egelantiersdwarsstraat 9; mains €13-26; dinner Tue-Sun) On a street bursting with excellent Italian food – Tuscan classics, fresh stuffed pastas, sublime yet simple desserts – this is our favourite. We witnessed a diner so thrilled with her ravioli that she asked to kiss the chef; he graciously complied.

Small World Catering International, Sandwiches €

Offline map Google map (www.smallworldcatering.nl; Binnen Oranjestraat 14; mains €6-9; 10:30am-8pm Tue-Sat, noon-8pm Sun; ) It’s no secret that the carrot cake here has been known to spawn serious addictions, leading to impulsive bike rides across town to score a fix before closing time. If the cake isn’t reason enough to come, the friendly international staff serves up daily specials like Aussie beef pie and ricotta cannelloni, along with possibly the most killer sandwiches in town. (To make your choice less agonising, the owner confessed his fave remains the pesto melt with grilled vegies and taleggio.)

Winkel Cafe €

Offline map Google map (www.winkel43.nl; Noordermarkt 43; mains €4-14; breakfast, lunch & dinner; ) This sprawling, indoor-outdoor space is great for people-watching, popular for coffees and small meals, and out-of-the-park for its tall, cakey apple pie. On market days (Monday and Saturday) there’s almost always a queue out the door.

Toscanini Italian €€

Offline map Google map ( 623 28 13; Lindengracht 75; mains €13-23, 6-course menu €45;
